Bring Back the Memories

Drive In Movie memories are cherished by all of us.  And Valentine’s Day is the ideal occasion to rewind time and indulge in nostalgia.  If your community still has drive-in theaters (you can find out how many by looking in your local yellow pages), you are set!

Drive In Theatre History

As of 2019 and according to Google, there were 321 Drive In Movie Theatres operating in the Unites States.  At their heyday in the 50s  and 60s, there were over 4000 of them operating, mostly in rural areas.

This industry began on June 6, 1933, the Camden Drive-In opened to eager motorists parking their automobiles on their grounds.  It was the first-ever drive-in movie theater, located on Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

The growth of cars and car ownership was a major factor in the success of the drive-in. Families could attend movies with small children or newborns without the usual worry about their kids disrupting other movie-goers.  Just roll up the windows until the crying or scrapping with siblings is over.

Due of the privacy a car would provide, young couples made drive-ins the preferred location for dates.  I don’t have to paint a picture for you if you had been lucky enough to attend the Drive Ins when you were in high school.  Usually a few carloads of your pals were on hand at least one night of the weekend.  Anybody ever sneak in unpaid in the trunk of your friend’s car?  I never did, but I did transport a few trunk buds that way lol.  It was great fun!

So this is where you and your number one come in.  Relive those nestling nights of private romance in front of the silver screen.  Don’t let your kids out of the trunk , though (just kidding)!

Do Some Research

Call ahead and note the times that are available. Drive-in cinemas may be incredibly romantic, and over the Valentine’s Day weekend, it’s probable that they will be showing a romantic picture.

What You Need

Prepare for a cozy evening together by packing a picnic dinner and a cozy blanket.

Watch the movie while driving or have lunch outside with a picnic and take in each other’s company.

It’s The Best

One of the simplest and most economical Valentine’s Day dates is this one, which will also bring back nostalgic feelings from the past.  I really hope that you and your Valentine can find a Drive In near you.  Maybe a weekend away with the Drive In as the main attraction would be great fun!

There is a Drive In Theatre about an hour away from our home, and my spouse and I have been talking about trying it out.  Apparently it is very popular and hard to get in.  Of course, living in Canada, winter and February don’t go well with Drive In movies.  However, maybe a gift card and raincheck could be part of your Valentines package if you live with the snow.  It will give you something to look forward to !
